Artist Statement

There comes a time in life when all past experiences merge: personal and professional paths cross, stories are connected and every hard-learned lesson has meaning and application. (Some people call this “mid-life.”) Be it mid-life, it’s a wonderful place and I’m happy to tread this stage of the journey. My experiences serve as a foundation for my vocation as speaker, educator, photographer, and author. I discovered at an early age that photography is my natural medium for personal expression. I have woven the art into every facet of my life. I discovered along my path, which has been a global one, that I have a passion for people of different cultures. I have devoted the rest of my career to facilitating multidimensional visual and communication arts projects. The magic that happens when individuals and communities step out of comfort zone, with a spirit of service-learning, is powerful and rewarding to all participants. I am a connector; joining people and their passions in near and far corners of the world. Some connections happen through my photography, others happen through experiential learning activities, and all happen through the process of investing time into relationships. My professional career has included photography, training and education, design, business owner and writer. I find great joy in empowering people to realize their own potential in contributing to the world with their unique gifts.
My philosophy on education and my style of teaching is hands-on. Experiential learning is foundational for discovering personal gifts and interests and growing into wisdom. I customize my courses and workshops for each audience, using a template of offerings in 4 categories: Editorial Photography, Photo Journalism, Making a Digital Photo Book, Global Link through Story Portraits. The Story Portrait Project is one that can engage a whole school, or selected classes, while the Photo Journalism course is a skill-building program designed for up to 15 participants. Each one of these can stand alone as a one week program or be combined to make a semester-long project. My programs include a teacher’s workshop which prepares teachers to facilitate a global service-learning project.
